Finally: Tamron 150-600 vs Canon 400 f5.6L

First off. I got to be honest, i simply haven’t had that much time with this lens so far. Busy weeks after Christmas. But today, i had an hour. The sun was out and settled this once and for all. Finally some low iso samples. This time i manually focused the Canon 400mm since it the focus was off. Might need to get that fixed before i sell it :)

Update: Available at Amazon here:
Tamron 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di VC SP USD Zoom Lens (for Canon EOS Cameras)

Something worth noting is the Canon being like half a step brighter than the Tamron. The contrast is a lot better on the Tamron.

So, this is the bonus part. I got my hands on a 70D. Finally some crop sensor comparisons as well.

  1. Thanks for this!
Whats surprising is the lack of CA in the Tammy against the “L”. Bokeh too looks very comparable.
Could you do one where the prime is cropped to 600mm (or uprezzed) on the 70D for something with a little more detail e.g. Stuff toy?
And how does it focus in tracking mode on the 70D. Surely it won’t come close to the 400 prime, but is it acceptable in good light?

    Cheers!

  2. Thank you so much for the test. I’ve been very impressed with all the test shots I’ve seen taken with this new Tamron lens. I cannot find any excuse for not getting it. My sigmonster is going up for sale.

    Happy shooting,

  3. would like to see real world examples of people or wildlife,in good lighting and low ISOs. so far it looks good but hard to tell just looking at street signs. also they say the lens is best at f/8 as far as sharpness and contrast. could we see examples at f/8. thanks!

    1. also it would be nice to see different focal lengths,150,300,450,600 so we can see how this lens looks throughout the zoom range. thanks!
